Andrew Malarkey

Andrew Malarkey, D.O.Shoulder Replacement, Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery

Dr. Andy Malarkey joined Orthopedic Associates of Southwest Ohio (OASWO) in September 2019. Raised north of Dayton, he is very excited to return “home”. After high school at Lehman Catholic in Sidney, he went on to Transylvania University in Kentucky, where he graduated magna cum laude and was inducted into their honors program. He received his Doctorate at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine before completing a five-year orthopedic surgery residency at Grandview Hospital in Dayton. To specialize in upper extremity surgery, Dr. Malarkey went on to pursue two fellowships – a one-year hand fellowship under the guidance of Drs. Bamberger, Harman, Martineau, Klug, Dann, and Gleason of OASWO; and a one-year shoulder fellowship under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Levy at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Actually, Dr. Malarkey is one of very few dual-fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons in the greater Dayton area.

With his special interest in shoulder and hand surgery, he can focus solely on complex upper extremity problems. Some examples of his diagnostic skills and surgical expertise in this particular area include reverse shoulder replacement, anatomic total shoulder replacement, arthroscopic shoulder and elbow procedures, upper extremity fracture management, carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, and arthritis of the hand and wrist. Also, Dr. Malarkey has a keen interest in patient-specific planning for shoulder replacement surgery. Using a preoperative 3D CT scan, he can individualize each patient’s care with a custom guide prior to even entering the operating room. He believes this provides the best outcomes for his patients.

In his free time, Dr. Malarkey enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. He loves to read, stay active, and although he is here in the Buckeye State, he is an avid University of Kentucky sports fan. Along with his excitement to return to Dayton area, he is very honored to become part of the OASWO family with its many fantastic surgeons who helped his surgical training.
